When I finally got to the front of the queue at Manchester’s Odeon cinema and asked for a ticket yesterday it was about 2:15. Screenings began every hour so I asked for a ticket for two o’clock - on the basis that there’d be ten minutes each of adverts and trailers before the film started. [...]

First off, if you haven’t seen In Bruges and aren’t planning to - you should. It’s not without its flaws, but it is very, very good. I liked it, anyway.
The film struck more than anything as a cross between Father Ted and … well, insert the title of some fairly brutal crime film here … [...]

In the last couple of days I’ve learnt two annoying and disheartening facts.
Annoying and disheartening fact number one: Although the Hollywood writers’ strike has now ended, the somewhat silly but utterly fantastic 24 will not return until January 2009. Damn it!
When the strike began in November, eight episodes had been filmed, so it wouldn’t take [...]

Fuck, that was far more stressful than a trip to the cinema should be. I don’t know how many terrorist attacks on cinemas there have been in India, but at the PVR multiplex (four screens) you’re not allowed to take in bags (women’s bags seem to be exempt), cameras, and a whole list of other [...]

As my last activity in Canada I went to see this with Pete and Vince. I liked it more than they did.
Horror movies aren’t my first choice of viewing pleasure, but I thought this was well-done and quite enjoyable. The first thing that you notice about it is the colour. It presented in a cold, [...]

The most notable thing about this film is that it’s very classy. The acting is immaculate, the dialogue good; it has a sombre look throughout - all grey and cold; and it has a complex structure with a speech from the middle right at the very start, and this is followed by a climactic scene [...]

If I actually thought in those terms I would say that we’ve been spoilt for cinematic humour this year: Superbad and Knocked Up have been two of the best comedy films I’ve seen.
Although obviously it’s an imperfect guide, a film’s trailer can give you a good feel for whether you’ll like the movie or not. [...]

This latest example of Hollywood’s obsession with fantasy was a pretty decent film.
The story seemed quite self-contained, so I assume (and you know what ‘assume’ makes) that it’s just a one-off, standalone movie. I could well be wrong - I’m not so interested that I want to do any sort of research for my review. [...]

I’d been looking forward to this film since I saw the trailers for it. I’d enjoyed David Cronenburg’s film from a couple of years ago - A History of Violence - so I thought this would be more of the same. Unfortunately, it was.
Many things about the two films are similar: Viggo Mortensen plays a [...]

You don’t get enough orgies in the movies these days. But I digest …
Perfume came out when I was in Korea, and I would have gone to see it, only a (far too cursory) glance at the poster revealed a number of German names, so I assumed it was a German film - and, as [...]
