Welcome to the personal blog of Captain Maybe (not my real name … or rank … not that I have a rank). Since March 2006, this has been a record of my life, times, thoughts, feelings and miscellaneous things I’m interested (books especially). I have been an English teacher in South Korea for much of that time and have had the opportunity to travel the world, including India, Canada, Japan, China, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and lots of places in Europe.
I’m from a working class town in north-west England and am quite happy to no longer live there. It took me about 25 years to escape Runcorn; in 2002 I started a creative writing degree at Bath Spa University. After I graduated in 2005, I moved to London, made friends with a Canadian who’d taught in South Korea – and the rest is history. Literally: it’s all written down here.
I am a fantasy writer – under the pen name of Sean May. I enjoy roleplaying games, and have created my own system with which I’m currently running a campaign. I’m also an atheist, rationalist and sceptic. A random selection of things I love includes cats, Metallica, comedy, Stephen R Donaldson, tea, Radio 4, Mozart, Queen (but not the Queen), Robert Rankin, science, puns, curry and secondhand bookshops.

Hi there, Funny blog, I found the thing which give your chaos mage a run for his money, psionics it does all sorts of fun stuff. have fun
Thanks, John. I’ve heard that psionics can really unbalance a game unless the whole thing is geared towards it. I think psionics is a little too science fictiony for a fantasy setting, though. But I’m sure it’d be interesting to try it.
I enjoyed reading on your site. Keep writing. Do it for you or the universe
Bernhard, hello and thanks. I may just do it for me AND the universe.
haha, your blog is funny, enjoyed bloghopping through it. =)
Thanks, Niki.
Hi
I live in Bali, Indonesia and am new to blogging.
My English is still not very good, but I keep trying to make it better. I am very interested in poetry and write some myself, (mainly in my own language – sometimes in English, but that’s still hard for me).
I like your writing very much and would love to stay in touch with you, both to share my writings and improve my own skills. I hope you don’t mind, or think me rude.
Best wishes…
Thanks for your comment. Your English seems very good to me.
Hi Captain Maybe how are you love ?
Well, I suppose I’ve been better … but I also suppose I’ve been worse.
Sean man! Cool blog! Good description for sure..
I’m loving the pic though man..totally album cover stuff.
I’ll have to keep coming back here..to check on your gas situation among other things..
Keep it real man!
Much to my embarrassment, I spent a minute or two wondering ‘Who do I know called Paul?’ However, I did eventually realise. Thanks for leaving a comment. The gas situation has now been resolved (I should write a post about that, probably); other situations are still ongoing (whatever they may be).
I very much enjoyed your blog especially since I happened upon it randomly. And the picture is fantastic! I do hope that your experience with the drunken Canadian teacher doesn’t colour your impression of all Canadians however lol! I would also like to say that I am a Bakker fan as well. I live in the city in which he teaches and I have a signed copy of The Darkness That Comes Before. It is great to find a fan outside of the country though. Good luck with your remaining time!
Thanks! Actually, all the Canadians I know like to drink – but that’s par for the course for young people earning generous wages in a foreign country, I suppose. I never saw the evidence of this guy being an alcoholic, but he seemed quite gentle-natured at other times.
Only eight months to wait for The Great Ordeal.
I don’t know what you celebrate, if at all, but I would still like to wish you a very Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas/Good Yuletide/Joyful Festivus….or a slightly late Happy Solstice lol! I celebrate a secular Christmas (is that even possible lol?!) simply out of family tradition but it is still a very special day to me; I wanted to be sure to pass on my best wishes to you in the spirit of the holiday.
Or ‘Merry Krishna’ as someone told me in an e-mail. Thank you – I appreciate the thought. I’ve seen a few shops here in Lucknow bedeck with seasonal decorations, and also a large church was open. It all seems very incongruous.
>Metallica,
Hopefully you mean the “real” Metallica…when Cliff Burton was a member.
Since he died, Metallica has gone straight downhill, continually releasing albums that are worse than the ones before them.
They’ve made a mockery of their once great name. I washed my hands of them after that monstrosity titled “St. Anger”.
Well … I don’t agree with you, Tokyo5. I love the whole range of Metallica – from the youthful exuberance and juvenilia of Kill ‘Em All to the grunginess and fury of St Anger. (ReLoad was a bit crap, though.)
In the ’80s, when Cliff was alive, Metallica always said that they would never make a music video for MTV or write songs that “sell out”.
But after Cliff died, that’s exactly what Metallica did…made a video for “One”, got Bob Rock for over-produce their next album, change their logo, cut their hair…and make, in my opinion, embarrassingly bad music.
I hate Metallica now more than a pop star…because, unlike pop stars, Metallica was once great—until they did what they said they’d never do…sold out.
I appreciate that you’re a fan of theirs…it’s just my opinion.
>I love the whole range of Metallica
So, I assume you plan to buy their new collaboration album with Lou Reed (!) titled “Lulu”…
I probably will get it at some point, but having heard one of the tracks already I’m in no hurry.
